In a recent interview The Verge, Matrix Resurrections Stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss were asked to comment on the NFT created for the next movie. This movie was so popular that it temporarily crashed a website that was on sale.
However, Reeves was unable to contain himself. His reaction was to laugh at the mere mention of NFT, the concept of digital deficiency. And it wasn’t just a polite laugh-the restrained star gave off a big, featureless cuckle after responding:
“Easy to reproduce.”
For those who are not happy about the existence of NFT, the acronym stands for “Non-Fungible Token” and is converted into a certificate of non-reproducible digital ownership certified using the Ethereum blockchain. Today, this technology is used to sell tweets, GIFs, digital artwork, and sometimes for huge sums.
The joke that made Reeves laugh is the fact that this is artificial scarcity, contrary to the spirit of the Internet. Obviously, just right-clicking on the NFT will save the image. Digital certificates will only appear as genuine and valuable, as many investors have decided that they should. Frankly, if you think you don’t understand the phenomenon, you probably understand it perfectly.
However, the environmental impact of NFTs is not a laugh. The verification process behind each NFT Amazing amount of energyAnd given that crypto infrastructure relies primarily on fossil fuels, the epidemic arrived at the worst possible time.
Basically, NFTs and most cryptocoins are throwing petrol on burning planets for digital “ownership” that only a handful of people actually recognize as legal. Totally Worth-In the face of environmental apocalypse, we can’t wait to aggressively accelerate fossil fuel consumption and tell our grandchildren that we’ve sold cat GIFs to foolish technicians. Hmm.
So it’s incredibly fresh to see Reeves react so honestly-most celebrities embrace technology with amazing enthusiasm. Beloved ones such as Snoop Dogg, William Shatner, Doja Cat, Tony Hawk, Eminem and Grimes all approve NFTs. Reese Witherspoon even tried to put a pseudo-feminist spin on the epidemic (because equality means that women should also attend the murine course!).
Maybe this is why Keanu Reeves continues to be such a beloved person. Despite being incredibly famous and widely admired, he still seems to be based on reality-the man isn’t in the Matrix yet.
